Stanford University has become the first university to raise $1 billion in a single year. They did it in 2012, ahead of Harvard, Yale, USC, and Colombia, in that order, of the . In FY 2012, roughly 3,500 U.S. colleges and universities raised $31 billion, 2.3 percent more than 2011. What I found amazing was that the top 10 fundraising colleges collected $5.3 billion, or 17 percent, of the $31 billion, even though they represent only 0.3 percent of the 3,500 accredited, nonprofit schools included in the survey.
